Daily Summary
The Ride
It was a really nice day. We started by riding over the Rainbow Bridge border crossing back into the US. Just a mile into the US, my front tubeless tire got a hole and we had to put a tube in. So, I had a flat just before entering Canada and just after leaving Canada. What are the odds?
It started cloudy but grew to sunny. After the first 23 miles of roads, we hit the Erie Canal trail and spent the last 60+ miles on that. It was a nice trail with gravel. But, the gravel really slows you down compared to the road. And, it is very bumpy. Thus, the ride took longer than I expected. I at least know that tomorrow will be similarly slow since we’re largely on a variety of trails again.
The Sights
The first picture I took as I rode across the bridge to the US. You can see the exact border based on the Canadian and US flags flying a little in front of me.
I got a couple pictures of the lock where we entered. It ends up that the canal isn’t used for commercial purposes anymore and is only open for recreational traffic in the summer months. After that is a picture of what the trail looked like pretty much all day. There is also a picture of the trail signs as well as a sign that shows the entirety of the 750 miles of trail in this system in New York.
There were some European style river boats going up and down the river. There were also a lot of old bridges that raise. Below the images, I uploaded a short video of one of the bridges raising as we went by. We talked to the bridge attendant about how it worked for a little bit.
The canal was actually much narrower than I would have guessed. We also never passed another lock after we entered.
The final picture is as I entered Rochester. There were some bigger waterways there.
