Daily Summary

The Ride

Finally a low wind day! We had a little wind early while going uphill, but finished with no impact. After a bit of a slow start, we had a solid day. Nothing of substance to report.

The Sights

It was really a lot of fields. Not much of note. The first picture shows a thin bridge if you zoom in. We rode over that across the Missouri River to start the day. Then, I have an early view that represents what we saw the whole day except for a few small towns.

We had lunch in Plankinton. For some reason, the name makes me think of SpongeBob.

The hotel is a 140 year old historic landmark down the block from lunch.

Old School Pavement

For about 20 miles, we had the old school pavement you see in the last picture. If you’re “of a certain age”, you’ll recognize this as the white 12×12 squares that used to be the standard. I remember when I was little riding in the car on vacation and getting almost hypnotized by the constant “thud, thud, thud” from going over all of the seams.

I hadn’t seen this type of paving in many years and suspect this section has been here for a long time. It was, naturally, not nearly as nice going over it on a bike and the constant bumps got really annoying.

The Hotel And Meals

Great hotel breakfast and picnic lunch. We’re at a Hampton in Mitchell, and it is a typical one. It has a hot tub, which is great.

We ate a huge dinner at a Mexican place.  I saw a Culver’s across the street and said we should go there for frozen custard. The guy from Michigan backed me, but some others were skeptical.

Everyone loved it and said that I was right. I told them, “You’ve got to learn to trust Uncle Billy!”.
