Daily Summary

The Ride

The weather was great again and it was a relatively short 61 mile ride. The first part had a couple of long hills, including another one that was in the teens in terms of grade for quite a bit and hit 19% at one point.  Then, it was a generally downhill pattern and we actually had some wind to our back for once. We got in early and are looking at just one more day tomorrow.

The Sights

New Hampshire is really nice. There are a ton of beautiful old houses along the roads. We had a lot of tree cover again per the first picture. Was passed a couple of really nice lakes as in the 2nd picture as well.

I saw an old rock wall that went for quite a distance. I can’t imagine the amount of effort it took to build it. Finally, the last 2 days we were along a lot of large streams. It was nice to see clear water and rocks again as I am used to in streams instead of the brown and flat water of the Erie Canal we saw for many days.

Some Bike Issues Resolved, And Some New Ones

My bike started making a click sound every now and then a few days ago. By today, it was an almost every pedal issue. Luckily, there was a bike shop a mile from the hotel. The mechanic tightened up a few things where the screws had become a bit loose and that fixed it! It took 10 minutes and he didn’t even charge me (though I gave him a tip).

Oddly, my broken shifter started working again today after several weeks. I always thought something had gotten stuck inside the shifter. I actually think the crazy bouncing around on the horrible trail yesterday may have shook out whatever was caught in there. So, you never know when some good might come of what seems to be a bad situation.

One other person was having issues with his bike. A bike shop yesterday told him they didn’t have the parts but that he could probably get another 100 miles out of it before it couldn’t be ridden. He rode one of the guide’s bikes today and I think plans to try and limp his own bike into the finish at the ocean tomorrow.
